Mrs Janet Smyth, Springhill Primary School, Belfast  writes....

'We have used the Read Write Company videos several times in order to train staff- both experienced and new, in the use of The CSP Spelling and Language Programme. We found the videos very useful.  The material is clear and concise, offering genuinely useful, sensible and practical explanation, context, instruction and advice on the use of the scheme. We have found that the use of the videos ensured a positive, confident start for all staff and they felt well informed from the outset.  As Literacy co-ordinator I can recommend these videos to any school embarking on using this excellent scheme.'

A teacher from St Patrick's Primary writes........

As a returning teacher after a lengthy absence it is difficult coming back and realising that there is a new Spelling Programme.

However, having watched all of the CPD videos I have to admit that the programme is clearly defined, presented and comprehensive. It covers all areas of phonic development, grammar and writing development on real connected learning.  Throughout the key stages it is evident that the programme is progressive and inclusive of all abilities. There is room for differentiation and progression/extension. I am very excited to see a programme such as this and can’t wait to use it. The training videos are prescriptive, descriptive and comprehensive, easy to follow and understand with appropriate examples to illustrate. A brilliant resource.

The continuous running time for all 7 videos is one hour twenty minutes. Pausing between videos, and within videos, to allow for discussion means that the required time for viewing and discussion would be approximately 3 hours depending on the issues raised in your group.
The CSP Spelling and Language programme introduction video for stages 1- 3 of the Programme is in two parts. Part 1 and part 2 below. These two videos provide an overview of Stages 1-3 and important considerations for implementation.

The first 2 editions of the programme were known as ‘The Complete Spelling Programme’ by Sharon McMurray and Christine Fleming. When the 2014 edition was released the programme was renamed 'The CSP Spelling and Language Programme'. These videos supports the 2014 (3rd) edition.

This video is 14 minutes long.

The CSP Spelling and Language Programme is a structured, developmental spelling course designed for use in primary schools. It incorporates a whole class teaching approach.  Spellings are planned for each school year and structured into daily word groups. Rhyme patterns and frequency words are presented 3 days per week and curriculum word banks are included in the programme. There are also weekly dictation sentences in stages 2-4 and teaching notes in all stages.  Learning is reinforced through support materials that are differentiated for differing abilities.  The support activities include a range of challenges designed to engage all processes involved in learning to spell and provide opportunities for applying spellings learned in independent writing.

This video explains the progression in the CSP spelling and language programme for stages 1-3. It is important that before viewing this video, you have read the introduction for each stage of the programme which can be found in the teachers manuals.  Understanding the progression in the first three stages is very important for the correct implementation of the programme. To achieve the same outcomes as the research it is essential that the programme is implemented as intended by the authors. This video presents the research findings so that schools understand what can be achieved.  The average standardised spelling score for children using the programme at the end of the research was 113, almost one standard deviation above the mean (statistical significance: p<0.0001 ; effect size 1.19).
